Craps is a thoroughly exciting and dynamic game, and it comes complete with its own range of terminology and specialist language. Let us take a look at some of the commonly heard phrases and terms that you will typically hear during a craps game.
The first is 2-way. This means that a player is betting a one-roll wager on both himself and the dealers at once.
Three-way craps is when a bet is made in units of three, placing one unit on two, one on three and one on twelve. Aces means betting on the fact that the very next roll will total 2. It is also known as snake eyes, though this term is a bit more outdated and not always applicable to a craps table. Any craps is when you bet that the next roll will be two, three or twelve. Any seven means that the next roll will be seven, according to the bets. In addition, it is worth remembering that the word ‘seven’ is never used at the craps table. Instead, players say ‘big red’.
Black is another form of dealer slang for chips of the value of $100. In most casinos, these chips are black – hence the name. There are also $25 dollar gaming chips, which, again in reference to their color, are referred to as ‘green’ as per most casino color coordination. The printed area where players place their wagers on the felt is known as the ‘lay out.’
The dice are often referred to as ‘bones’ and the dealers are often referred to as ‘the boys’. In addition, a table supervisor sits opposite the stickman and in between the dealers. This person is called ‘the boxman’. The stickman, as his name suggests, sits holding a stick opposite the dealer. This person pushes the dice in the direction of the shooter and calls the rolls.
The shooter is the person that is rolling the dice. The number 12 is also known as ‘boxcars’, whereas the place-bet numbers four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten are known as ‘box numbers’. When no one at the table is making a bet, the situation is referred to as ‘cold dice’. The first roll of the game that establishes a point is called the ‘come out roll’, and the bet made immediately after this is called the ‘come bet.’
Players also refer to the free stuff provided to players during the game as ‘comps’. These might be free chips or drinks, depending on the situation and casino. Players that tend to tip dealers or other service staff at the table generously are commonly referred to as ‘George’. A tip is commonly called a token in casinos and is done in the form of chips rather than pure cash in order to better track the money flow involved by the casino.
The CCTV cameras or the security departments in the casino are referred to as the ‘eye in the sky’. These are what monitor the players in the casino and check for cheating and irregularities.
Now you are ready to hit the Craps table! Good luck!
