In the past, Atlantic City’s entertainment has wound down at the end of the summer and became sketchy during the winter months. Of course certain things that can be done in the summer do stop, like beach bars go back into storage, outside concerts pretty much stop and outdoor dancing goes back indoors. But, this year Atlantic City is offering more entertainment than it has in the past on the off season.
It is typical that artists like to schedule summer tours rather than winter, but because more visitors and patrons seem to be coming to Atlantic City during months other than June, July and August, venues are offering more entertainment in order to keep them happy. There will be more frequent shows coming from all the properties in Atlantic City. The fall schedule rivals any summer schedule that has been in existence for several years.
There are 92 events scheduled for the first 16 weekends of the autumn season from September 12, 2009 to December 26, 2009. There were only 88 shows booked in the city for the 16 summer weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day. These statistics do not included ongoing or long running shows in town. Atlantic City is trying to make this a destination to come to all year round instead of just a summer destination.
Boardwalk Hall is not a casino; it is an entertainment venue that holds over 13,000 people. During the summer the hall had three music shows that performed periodically. They were Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy buffet, and the American Idols Live! Tour. At this time only the Legends Classic Basketball tournament is scheduled for November 27 and 28. The excuse for not using the hall all year round is because not many entertainers want to tour in the Atlantic City during the fall and winter months. The hall’s general manager hopes that there would be three more arena shows to add to the fall schedule and as schedules are set long into the future, he is seeing a little more interest in the 2010 fall winter season which gives hope to that venue for more opportunities in the future. The recession is blamed for the lack of performers during the 2009 fall winter season.
Most of the casinos see entertainment in the area as being a draw to their venues. They completely support the plan to have world class performers in town all year round in order to draw more people in through their doors that will want to drop some money in their slots or on the casino floor.
The Taj Mahal Casino has the second largest entertainment venue in the city after the Boardwalk Hall with the Mark G. Etess Arena that has a 5000 seat capacity. This venue is booked for 15 events during the fall winter season and there may be more to come.
Harrah’s Resort is trying something a little different. All four of their properties are hosting the first “OUT in AC” weekend on Sept 25 to 27 that celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. Cast members from Showtime’s “The L Word” and other celebrities will be present.
Look to Atlantic City all year round, even when the snow flies, for great entertainment at good prices and be sure to visit the casinos in town while you are there.
