Many people go to the casino for the enjoyment of gaming and the thrill that the slot machines and other games give you. However, some go for other reasons. Whether or not you are heading to the casino for the right or wrong reason, the cocktail waitresses are bound to catch your eye. Some are young, some are older and some look better than others. Regardless of the latter, many have lost their jobs due to not having the sex appeal factor.
In Atlantic City, new costumes came into play at Resorts Casino Hotel. Once these new costumes came in, the waitresses were apparently asked to pose in their new black costumes, which were of course a little on the skimpy side, for a photo shoot. The new costumes, according to the Associated Press, were very short black dresses that revealed the skin and has deep open backs. There was also the requirement for ornate jazz era hats and fishnet stockings. What the women didn’t know was that it wasn’t a photo shoot for display or a size fitting but it was more of an evaluation process to determine the women who would get to keep their jobs and the ones that would be fired.
After the photo shoot, which was in late February, 15 women were fired in March with the specific reason for “violating uniform standards”. The 15 women believe that the real reason they were fired because they were older or heavier set women and simply did not fit in with the image that the land-based casino was trying to pursue, which is a 20s theme similar to what is displayed on Boardwalk Empire, a very popular show on HBO. The casino spokesman had this to say about the rebranding effort: “This particular cocktail server costume was chosen as part of the larger plan to unveil the new Resorts Casino Hotel as a destination for fun, excitement and a one-of-a-kind experience.”
Seven of the 15 that were fired are filing lawsuits against (suing) Resorts Casino Hotel for age and sex discrimination. Legal action is under consideration by the other eight women. One of these 15 women had been with the casino since 1978 when the casino first opened their doors and was named the employee of the month twice.
The women surely understand that a sex appeal is a factor in the cocktail serving business but the thing is that there are men of all different ages, shapes and sizes and therefore like women of all different ages, shapes and sizes. You don’t have to be young and skinny to be sexy to men – there are plenty of men that like older women and women with a little meat on their bones.
It was basically an out with the old and in with the new scheme as the middle-aged women that were canned have now been replaced by younger women in their 20s. These women don’t plan on letting their former boss get by with such a discriminating, demeaning and degrading process.
