The Greenbrier, a four star West Virginia resort has announced that a small casino will be added sometime during the fall and a full gambling operation will be open by April 2010.

The Greenbrier is located in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia and has been a luxury resort for many years.  The beautiful columned building has been welcoming guests since 1778 and is a National Historic landmark with gorgeous gardens, stylish guest rooms, and boasts flawless service.    The resort has 635 rooms that include 33 suites and 96 estate houses.  The Resort itself has 10 lobbies, 40 meeting rooms and can host a conference without any problem at all.  There are over 50 activities available to guests and that includes 3 championship golf courses, tennis courts and a large and lovely spa.

Recently, the Greenbrier was suffering a bankruptcy and was purchased for $20.1 million in May of this year by Jim Justice.  He hopes bringing a casino will increase profits for this historic resort and plans are being drawn for a $25 million elegant and tasteful casino.  Groundbreaking should commence in a few weeks and plans are to add some table games and slot machines within 10 weeks of this date.

Also being planned are shops, a sushi bar, and restaurant that will be built under the front lawn of the resort.  On top of the new addition will be a reflecting pool, garden and walkway.  Guests that wish to gamble will be separated from any other guests by a magnificent circular staircase with waterfalls on both sides or they can use the elevators located near the front entrance.  Justice didn’t want to build anything that would take away from the grace and beauty of the current property.  Guests coming to Greenbrier for the spa or recreational activities will have something extra to come for now.

The interior designers, Christina Romann and Craig Smith have previously designed the Greenbrier’s Sporting Club Lodge, the theater in the resort and the North Entrance corridors.  They understand the history of the property and interested in keeping the historical and elegant ambiance of the building.

While the casino is being built, guests will be able to participate in playing slot machines and table games in the former Tavern Room in the Virginia Wing of the resort.   It will be a small operation for the duration of the big build underground.

Voters in the area approved gambling at the resort last year in hopes that it would bring the area’s economy up.  The State has not yet processed the Greenbrier’s license application and it will take about four to six weeks to do so, but the resort feels that it can get the needed information in to the agency in the allotted time.

This casino addition will create about 200 jobs at the site.  It will attempt to maintain a five star status, something not too many hotels or resort can do.  The focus of the property will not focus on the casino; instead the casino will be an amenity of the resort and will create another experience for guests.
