On the fourth day of this year’s WSOP championship, there were thousands of players that were turned away at the door. It didn’t matter who you were or how good you were at poker- the chances of getting turned away were equal for all entrants. Many fans were disappointed when their favorite profession, which they had come to see, was turned away and denied access to the tournament.

Registration for the main event opened on the first, and the tournament had four “first days” to accommodate nearly 12,000 players. But less than two thousand players competed on the first and third day; and less than one thousand on the second day.  The buy-in was $10,000 per player this year.

This tournament has been known to sell out before it starts every year. If it doesn’t sell out before the starting day of the tournament, it surely sells out when people start registering at the door.

The commissioner of the WSOP told the press that this was in no way intentional and this is not how they want the WSOP organization to be looked at. They plan to redeem themselves from these actions in the upcoming months.

Despite efforts and apologies from Pollack, the players that were denied entry into the main event didn’t feel any consolation and were still angry.  Officials made an announcement that there was simply not enough physical space to fit everyone. They held a press conference and told all the poker players that the situation is out of their hands because it has come down to a situation where there is not enough tables and chairs. They went on to say that they can’t have players sitting on the floor playing because it would violate WSOP rules and regulations. The players were in no way pacified by this press conference.

The format of the tournament was kept the same as planned so that it was sure that the game would be fair to all players.  Officials repeatedly reminded the players that they tried everything they could to accommodate everyone but it was impossible. They didn’t seem overly apologetic but rather embarrassed of the media attention it gained. Despite the multiple apologies, the players refused to muffle their furious outcries.

There were many players that traveled across the country to come and play in this tournament. They spent tons of money just to get there and play. As of now, none of these players are being reimbursed for their travels. Many of these travelers didn’t see themselves coming back to Vegas in the near future because of this chaotic event.

This event brought the most players the event had ever seen to register. There are a total of 6,494 players that will try to place in the money rounds of this tournament. The total prize money is $61 million dollars. The champion will take home $8.5 million dollars.
