According to a recent report by the news agency, Reuters, fake security software and similar products are the leading cause of online security problems for computer users over the course of the last year. The cyber security company, Symantec, found that Apple computer users, previously much more inured against such online problems, have now lost some of the past relative immunity they once had against online crimes due to the fact that many more of them are now storing data online via connected servers rather than on their local hard drives.

Symantec, in the course of compiling their report, found that Brazil had climbed to third place on the list of which countries are experiencing the most malicious online activity including spam and online scam attempts as well as numerous other types of online crime. In the latest list the United States stayed in first place, coming in with 19%, with China ranking second on 8% and Brazil standing third with 6%. Many analysts believe that it may be something of a good thing online gambling operators are unable to flourish in the top three countries on the list.

In the usual course of events online gamblers tend to be rather more tech savvy than most and tend to be much more knowledgeable with regards to any possible malware invasions and intrusions that can run largely undetected on their systems, as it gleans personal information that could be used to compromise identities. The vast majority of online gambling websites and operators are constantly on the lookout for any internet-related irregularities and problems, and tend to be incredibly vigilant with regards to keeping their online users safe from any malefic web-based threats.

Among the most publicized and at the same time highly criticized cyber events that occurred over the past year were sophisticated attacks on Google web sites as well as on other large corporations. One of Symantec’s Vice Presidents, Vincent Weafer, commented he and the firm felt the single most common type of online crime was related to the use of fake security software. The scam is particularly popular due to the fact that it entices users to part with their credit card information online, which can be used by unscrupulous people in addition to compromising their computer’s security.

The scam is usually viewed by computer users as a flashing advert that their system may be infected with a computer virus or some other malware. The questionable notice usually also comes with a link to the illicit protection software that can then be downloaded after the user provides payment via credit card. If the user does so, however, rather than getting the software they will get a virus or some other malicious program. Online gamblers have been urged to use legitimate online casinos that are well established when gambling for money online to negate risk.
