It is confirmed that the Productivity Commission has advised the Australian Government to actually relax ban on online poker. And the recommendation meant lifting of the law against online gambling. However, the Australian government just refused to listen to the independent advisory body.
The commission has actually released a report last week and it suggested abolishment of the Interactive Gambling Act of 2001. The abolishment was said for the liberalization of the laws against online poker in Australia.
Stated in the report: “Australian Government should repeal the Interactive Gambling Act and, in consultation with state and territory governments, should initiate a process for the managed liberalization of online gaming.”
But then the Australian Government has rejected the suggestion. On behalf of the Labor Government, Communications Minister for former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd Stephen Conroy rejected it.
Conroy stated: “We are not convinced that liberalizing online gaming would have benefits for the Australian community which would outweigh the risks of an increased incidence of problem gambling, particularly with the rapid changes in technology.”
However the Australian Productivity Commission seemed to believe that the prohibition might just result to more serious problems.
Stated also in the report: “The long-run consequences of prohibition may be higher problem gambling risks and a loss of commercial opportunities and tax revenue in Australia. Consequently, a gradual approach to managed liberalization that commenced with the likely safest form of online gambling, poker card games, would seem to be an effective way forward.”
Well, we hope that the Australian Government and the Productivity Commission finally discover the best thing to do as far the issue that has something to do with online gambling is just concerned. May the Australian Government and the Productivity Commission actually find out the best thing to do of course for the people of Australia.
