Steve Wynn did much to change the perspective of Las Vegas by introducing all glamour in the 1990’s. He is one of the most successful casino developers of our time.
He was born Steven Alan Weinberg, his name being changed by his father to Wynn when he was just six months old. His dad owned bingo parlors in the state of New York and this name change was a method to promote them. His father died in 1963 leaving the family with $350,000 of gambling debt which taught the young Wynn a very valuable lesson.
Don’t gamble with your own bottom line.
Steve graduated from University of Pennsylvania and took over the bingo parlor in Maryland. He did so well he was able to pay back the family debt and bought a bit of the Frontier Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. His business sense was impecable and he was able to get a controlling intrest in the Golden Nugget LasVegas. He developed the property into a gambling resort with a hotel and expanded casino that brought in high end clientelle to downtown Las Vegas.
Wynn’s first major casino was the Mirage opening in 1989. This is the resort that started the whole glamour and excessive lifestyle manner on the strip. It had an incredible indoor forest and the volcano outside would spit lava and reglular intervals. Steve was heavily involved in the design of this casino and has been in every one of his casinos since. He has the sense to know what people will appreciate and what will lure them in.
The Mirage cost $630 million and made Steve Wynn common word in Las Vegas. Treasure Island Hotel and Casino was next in the accomplishments of this man with the first permanent show in town, Cirque du Soleil. Bellagio was built next and it includes a lake, art gallery, boutiques and high end restaruants. Bellagio at the time was the most expensive hotel in the world.
His new addition to the Las Vegas Strip is Encore, built during a time when revenue is down in Las Vegas. When asked if he was sorry he developed this property, he said he wished he would have known what the economy had in store. These things are planned about 4 years ahead of time and he was already into the thick of the development and couldn’t stop. Encore cost about $2.3 million to develop and if anyone can make it a success, even in this economy, Steve Wynn will.
