On first sight, they appear to be fast, loud, shiny, fun and potentially lucrative. Rules and etiquette, however, are not necessarily the first things that may spring to mind when you think of the machines, though. In addition, playing the slots is, in essence, a solitary occupation. It is as well, though to be aware of some of the rules and more casual rules (etiquette) that exist when playing slot machines.
The first thing to be aware of when you walk into a casino and head to the slot machines is in actually choosing a machine to play on. You might, for instance, see that someone appears to have left a coat or a coin cup on the machine and your first instinct might be to think ‘careless last player’, or simply to put it to one side and vow to head to the lost property desk after your session. The fact that these items are on the machine, however, generally indicate that someone is still in the process of using that particular machine, and they might simply be either taking a bathroom break or going to get some more change. In either case, slot ‘rules’ dictate that you should respect the other person’s playing time and seek out an alternative slot machine for your session.
A player can, if they so wish, choose to play fast and on several slot machines at once, and there is no problem at all with this, except when a casino gets particularly busy, in which case to do so would be deemed rude to others. Indeed, some casinos actually restrict players from playing on more than one slot machine when the casino starts to get busy, and they will often put up signs to this effect. In such a case, the rule is to keep a slot machine free for other players when more people come in to the casino to play. Another ‘rule’ concerns smoking, and smokers should remember to put their ashtray in a place where the smoke will not upset other players. In addition, some casinos allow smoking in specific areas, whilst other do not allow it at all, so be sure to check.
In the event that you strike it lucky and win a jackpot, there is the potentially embarrassing issue of tipping. In the event that a casino attendant has to hand-pay you your deposit, this is the time to consider how happy you have been with the service and tip accordingly. Remember, though, that this is very much your own choice.
In terms of the actual rules of the game itself, you start off by buying special chips, coins or tickets, or you can use a club card. You then need to choose a slot machine that corresponds to your money limits and then insert your coin or card. You then need to select the overall number of coins you want to play, and for this you use the ‘Bet one credit’ or alternatively the ‘Bet max credits’ selectors (commonly buttons on the front of the machine). In the event that you are playing on a multi-reel video slot machine, you will also need to select the total number of pay lines on which to bet. You need then to push the button to spin the reels or pull the lever in order to get the reels spinning. When the reels stop, you will need to ‘cash out’ in order to get your winnings.
